Asbestos Removal

Exposure to asbestos can cause serious health issues and sometimes even death. Asbestos was widely used in B.C. as a building material until the early 1990s, and it can be present in many areas of older buildings. If you suspect asbestos is present, do not touch or move it as this can cause irreversible health problems.

Found in dozens of items in older buildings, asbestos breaks down into small fibers as it ages or when it is disturbed. Touching or moving it releases the fibers into the air, where they can linger for hours, often not visible to the eye.

Asbestos can be found in:

  • drywall
  • asbestos duct tape & vent fibreboard
  • vinyl tiles, texture & ceiling coatings
  • pipe insulation
  • lathe and plaster
  • roofing
  • sheet vinyl flooring
  • fiberboard
  • siding
  • ceiling tiles
  • mastic
  • vermiculite (attic insulation) and more

WorkSafeBC has changed laws and regulations and municipalities and regional districts are cracking down. If you apply for any type of building or demo permit they will ask you for an asbestos clearance letter, which you can only obtain from certified asbestos removal company such as Lan Mar. It can be difficult and costly for you to obtain this if not abated properly, if there is no documentation that the work was done using the regulatory safe working procedures, and if there is no evidence that the materials were properly disposed of at a licensed facility. Please ensure that anyone you direct to perform abatement of asbestos is a qualified abatement contractor following all WorkSafeBC approved abatement procedures. We often see people create headaches and stress for themselves by doing their own abatement or using unqualified workers.

We then can then safely remove the asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials. Lan Mar then takes care of all the paperwork to document proper storage and disposal, WorkSafeBC Notice of Project etc, and then an environmental company performs the final air clearance report. This final clearance is important for safe re-habitation and also critical for any other workers or inspectors to enter your building.

Feel free to contact Lan Mar to discuss your renovation project, there is no obligation and we can usually clarify the process so you more fully understand your options and requirements when it comes to removing asbestos.
